What to understand
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic check when a concern is recognized, and no later than age seven. The visit may lead to observation only, further assessment, or a treatment plan if needed.
What to clarify at an examination
Timing depends on the child’s development and the reason for the visit. Talk with a dentist or orthodontist if you notice chewing difficulty, crowding, an unusual bite, or teeth erupting outside the arch.
Questions to ask
Should every child begin treatment at age seven? No. The recommendation concerns an assessment, not automatic treatment.
