What to understand
Crowding or spacing, difficulty bringing teeth together, teeth erupting unexpectedly, or changes after past treatment can raise an orthodontic question. These signs do not prove treatment is needed, but can be discussed at an examination.
What to clarify at an examination
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an assessment when a concern is recognized and no later than age seven for children. This is a recommendation to be checked, not to begin treatment. Adults can ask questions at any age.
Questions to ask
What should I bring? Questions, relevant health and medication information, and past records if available. The clinician will decide whether images or further assessment are needed.
